I was thinking about this. My mrs keeps the butter in the fridge but i like it soft from the cupboard. It's Canada though so sometimes we put it in the fridge to soften it up!

I didn't know there was a choice with butter, but I know the big fridge/counter controversy is eggs.

yeah it's only in North America that we chill eggs. It took my friend who just moved to London ages to find them on the regular store shelf.
I highly recommend trying some cupboard butter. i chill my eggs.

I was under the impression that it would go bad until just a few years ago. I'm guessing most people think that way. that's what we do. it spreads so nicely.

I think it depends on where you live. I lived in Florida and I don't expect butter would last a day...
As far as eggs, a lot of folks don't know that cookbooks assume room temperature eggs in the recipes.

I'm like AC... keep some in a closed Tupperware on the counter (I a cat), then the rest in the fridge until I need it.
My new microwave has a Soften Butter button.... That works! It actually softens, not moltens.
