What an awesome photo. I can't even imagine what that gathering may have been like. I go to my fair share of scientific meetings, but we mostly just drink beer and talk B.S. Just look at those names: Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, Langmuir, Planck, Schrodinger. Holy crap the beer must have been good!

Just think how badass Marie Curie must have been.

I was thinking the same thing... did they treat her as the equal she was, or no? I'm hoping they did :)

Having read biographies of at least 4 of the folks in that photo, my understanding is that they treated her as a peer. These folks had little in the way of social graces or skills and cared little of social convention. They were all about the science. After all it was their peers who gave Curie the Nobel (twice).

Apparently she faced some prejudice (8 years after her Nobel win she lost a seat in the Academy of Science to a lesser - male - scientist) but this was also about her being a Polish Jew. Seems there was plenty of bigotry to go around.

Einstein actually wrote a letter to Curie on how to deal with haters...
