anyone know anything about promoting a blog, search engine optimization, etc?

Part of my professional life (TV) involves doing guest spots on TV and I have launched a blog for the various people who have me on their show to promote. I am wondering what, outside of that, i can be doing to pump up the traffic.

any thoughts?

Write articles for the entertainment section of Huffington Post? I think that gets you a link back to your site or something. I'm not 100% on how that works but remember reading an article about how the authors get publicity rather then money for their writing there (some of them went on "strike" after the AOL acquisition).

There are books you can buy that teach search engine optimization. But I've never done it personally.

And I know you've mentioned it before in other posts but add your blog site to your profile... ;)

AC, check out that link Noobiee had to Google's SEO starter guide. There's good info there and it's what I've used to try and optimize my own stuff. I'm far from an expert, I just kind of mess around a little bit here and there with my various blogs. But I've been dicking around with stuff for a few years so I learn a little bit.

Adding your site to your sig is an easy, passive way to gain traffic. I'm not sure it will do much for overall page rank and all that since this site isn't related to that sort of entertainment, but you'll get a few eyeballs here and there.

Associated Content has become a sort of platform to promote my different websites so if you can write some stuff there that should help in promotion. The Huffington Post would be even better. I've made these same suggestions to my uncle who is trying to market a couple books he's written, unfortunately he is a computer illiterate and is still trying to figure out how to upload his photo...

I'm not sure that this is the kind of info you're looking for, but in case it is I'll throw it out there:

From what I've read around the SEO internets, a keyword percentage of 2-5% is desirable (iirc). This means that 2-5% of your text should be the keyword(s) your site is looking to be associated with. Google also has the Keyword Search tool which lets you see how much traffic various keywords generate, and how much advertiser competition there is for those keywords.

From my experience, longevity and lots of interrelated content is what helps the most. You should link within your own site as it pertains to various posts as that allows web crawlers to understand your blog/site better, and hence give you better organic search ranking.

Google will tell you time and time again that unique, focused content is key. If you can deliver that en masse you'll probably do good.

If you enjoy writing and opining (which I imagine you do given your profession), I suggest writing on AC or something similar. There are quite a few celebrity names I've seen writing for AC that must do it only for publicity, and given your creds you may be able to work in some syndication fairly easily (AC syndicates to other Yahoo sites depending on your writing chops). I've gotten over 8,000 page views there writing hack stuff, so I imagine with your built-in audience you could get a lot of free eyeballs there. If you can get on to the HP as Noobiee suggested, even better...but I'm not sure it's easy to get published there?

There's always the advertising route, Google probably still offers $100 in free Adwords credits. Basically you write your own ad text and pay Google each time someone clicks your ad. Or in the case of the free $100, google pays google.

You could make a Facebook fanpage or something like that? FB seems more and more like the way to market things, but it can also turn people off.

Other than that, you could hit up IMDB and celebrity fansites to let people know. I imagine that would generate some direct traffic. I posted something in a couple very obscure forums about my latest Jim Bakker blog and suddenly I have a boatload of daily visitors. Boatload is a relative term of course, but it dwarfs my daily traffic on my atheism blog. Who knew there was such a market for the guy?

Hope that helps you out dude.
